Although I grew up in northern Virginia, I have lived in Asia all my adult life. In 1987, I moved to Japan, and since 1995 I've been living in Kagoshima, Kyushu, next to one of the most active volcanoes in the world, Sakurajima. (I took the photo above up the street from my house.)

I spend my days studying and researching things Japanese — history, culture, folklore — and walking in the beautiful countryside, swimming, and writing.
